Patient stories

How do you live a life in constant storms if there is nowhere a safe harbor? The metaphor not only symbolizes Fabien, who, with its pronounced ADHD, did not have a healthy home with the addictive father or the emotionally negligent mother. He actually spent two years on the high seas - in the youth ship, a controversial and now closed institution for young people who are difficult to educate.

"I built a lot of crap, stole bicycles and mopeds, for example," explains the 38-year-old today. His mother therefore chose this measure together with the youth welfare office. The idea: young people should learn from their surroundings from drilling to insert themselves and contribute their part to the community. It only comes away from the ship who has met expectations for 40 weeks. It took two years at Fabien When he had solid ground under his feet again, he was 16 years old.

Diagnosis ADHD

As a therapeutic measure, the intervention had no persistent effect - rather it was a confirmation of what Fabien had experienced all his life: that it does not fit in anywhere and cannot handle structures and rules. Already in primary school he was divided into the small class because of his conspicuous behavior, where he could not stay due to underwhile. Back in the regular class, it was not sustainable.

At the age of nine, the diagnosis of ADHD brought an explanation for his behavior and Ritalin a temporary solution. A year later he read in his father's hemp magazine that ADHD medication in the brain looks similar to cocaine. Characterized by his father's drug addiction, he wanted nothing to do with such substances and dismissed the medication independently.

Fabien only partially attributes his conspicuous behavior to ADHD. "With my mother I was able to do what I wanted, she wasn't interested," he says. He also largely had been denied together, reading, cuddling, speeches. Accordingly, he had not learned to deal with rules and structures.

Work and shelter lost

He also attributes these circumstances that he could not hold his apprenticeship as a baker/confectioner he started after the youth ship. Shortly after the demolition, his mother's partner at the time threw him out of his apartment - Fabien had forgotten a candle, causing his mattress to caught fire. Although he had a warm relationship with his biological father, he could not stay with him and his mother either.

Initially, he soon found access to the left -wing autonomous occupation scene. He was satisfied for a while. "I had my calm. Every now and then I had to serve a bus, but that didn't stress myself," he says. However, he only found his luck when he found a school friend on Facebook at the age of 25 and the two fell in love.

Fabien still lived without ADHD medication-not only because of his addiction to addiction, but also because it has green stars, which represents a contraindication for all ADHD medication. "My ADHD is so pronounced that I am hardly able to do with relationships without therapy," explains Fabien . "My fellow human beings find me annoying because I am restless and I quickly get hurtful in my impulsiveness."

Joy of life thanks to cannabis

Four years ago, he and his family doctor talked about the possibilities of cannabis therapy. Since then he has been taking Dronabinol, a liquid synthetic THC preparation. His symptoms are greatly alleviated, but his stomach did not play. That is why a specialized pharmacy now produces Dronabinol capsules with coconut oil as a carrier: 60 capsules cost almost 2000 francs. The health insurance pays the costs.

However, since flowers would be much cheaper and have a good effect on it, he tries to obtain a cost of costs, but is granite. With the help of a doctor that the Association Medcan gave him, he now represents the fifth application for reservation. "The next step is the insurance combination site," he says resolutely.

Why he is ready to fight a long-term financially portable and economically sensible solution becomes all the more understandable if, in addition to your ADHD history, you also know your physical complaints: Due to a herniated disc, he took the approved maximum dose of Novalgin over four years, but this should only be used for a short time due to possible side effects. He only got away with the dronabinol drops.

After a long odyssey, Fabien found his home port. He lives with his girlfriend, moves to 100 percent IV pension and, thanks to the cannabis preparations, is capable of getting the household, taking care of the dog and keeping a stable circle of friends.

Things to know about ADHD

  • Around three to five percent of children - boys significantly more often than girls - in Switzerland have ADHD.
  • The symptoms can appear as early as preschool through adulthood and persist into adulthood in around 60% of those affected.
  • The most common ADHD symptoms are:
    - Inattention/easily distracted
    - Poor concentration/forgetfulness
    - Hyperactivity
    - Impulsivity such as outbursts of anger
    - Slow reactions
    - Motor difficulties in toddlers
  • For those affected, ADHD is often accompanied by increased irritability, depression, aggressiveness, anxiety disorders and tic disorders.
What is ADHD?

Scientific research results suggest that signal transmission in the brain is disturbed in those affected by ADHD. According to current research, the following 3 factors are considered to be the main triggers for ADHD:

  • genetic predisposition
  • acquired triggers such as pregnancy and birth complications or smoking and alcohol during pregnancy
  • psychosocial conditions

The environment in which affected children grow up strengthens or weakens their predisposition. Current research assumes that the cause of ADHD is an interplay of neurobiological (sometimes hereditary) and psychosocial factors.

Interesting facts about glaucoma

About 2% of people over the age of 40 in Switzerland are affected by glaucoma. The risk increases with age and the disease can remain unnoticed for a long time.

The most common symptoms of glaucoma are:

  • Increased intraocular pressure
  • Clever visual loss, starting with restrictions on peripheral vision
  • Blurry seeing or sensitivity to light
  • Eye and headache (for certain glaucoma)
  • In severe cases of sudden vision loss
What is glaucoma?

Glaucoma (green star) is a chronic eye disease caused by an increased intraocular pressure or a circulatory disorder of the optic nerve. This leads to a progressive degradation of nerve cells and can lead to blindness.

Causes and risk factors:

According to the current state of research, there are several main triggers for glaucoma:

  • Increased intraocular pressure by disturbed drainage of the chamber water
  • Genetic predisposition (family accumulation)
  • Circulatory disorders of the optic nerve , e.g. B. through high blood pressure or diabetes
  • Certain medication (e.g. cortisone)
  • Older age

Glaucoma often develops creeping and initially causes no noticeable symptoms. Regular ophthalmological examinations are crucial to recognize and treat glaucoma early.
