10 years Association MEDCAN – A decade in the fight against prejudice and for patient rights
A vision is born
In Switzerland, it became possible for the first time in 2011 to prescribe cannabis with a special license from the Federal Office of Public Health (BAG). This regulation allowed doctors to submit applications for seriously ill patients in exceptional cases. But only a few of those affected were even informed about this possibility.
It was clear to the founders of Medcan that the topic “cannabis in medicine in Switzerland needs more attention. After intensive discussions and the search for a sustainable approach, the Association Medcan was launched on December 16, 2014. From the beginning, the goal was certain: to support those affected who rely on cannabis for health reasons and to promote the medical use of cannabis professionally and without reference to Recreational Consumption .
Successes and challenges
The last ten years have been characterized by a lot of work. We have achieved a lot together:
- Patient meetings are organized in various Swiss cities, offering those affected a safe space for exchange and support.
- We in public relations to break down prejudices and take the topic out of the taboo zone.
- Political pressure applied to achieve changes in legislation and ease access.
- a growing community that inspires and empowers each other.
- The faces and stories of those affected are brought into focus in order to make the relevance and urgency of our work visible.
- Media presence used to anchor the topic more broadly in society.
But our path was by no means easy. The fear of stigmatization, the often unclear legal framework and the lack of financial and human resources have continually challenged us. Many of us who work for the Association are chronically ill ourselves and yet are willing to invest what little energy we have in this important work.
It is these people who have made the Association MEDCAN what it is today: a strong voice for the medical use of cannabis in Switzerland. Without their courage, strength and tireless conviction we would not be here.
A heartfelt thank you
We would like to take this special moment to thank everyone who has accompanied us on our journey:
- The patients who, despite their own challenges, have found the courage to speak publicly about their experiences.
- The members and volunteers who work tirelessly towards our goals with passion, time and expertise - often despite their own health limitations.
- To everyone who has supported us with donations, material resources or their public voice.
You all are the heart of MEDCAN. Your commitment, your stories and your energy are the reason why we can look back on a successful decade today.
A look into the future
Our mission is far from over. In the coming years, we must continue to work to ensure that all patients who rely on the medical use of cannabis have access to it.
We want:
- acceptance in society .
- Helping even more people affected to exercise their rights and find the right treatment.
- the legal framework and Association in access.
Together we will overcome the next hurdles. Our vision remains: a Switzerland in which the medical use of cannabis is a given.
