10 years Association MEDCAN – A decade in the fight against prejudice and for patient rights
A vision is born
In Switzerland, it became possible for the first time in 2011 to prescribe cannabis with a special permit from the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH). This regulation allowed doctors to submit applications for seriously ill patients in exceptional cases. However, very few of those affected were even aware of this possibility.
The founders of MEDCAN recognized that the topic of cannabis in medicine needed more attention in Switzerland. After intensive discussions and the search for a sustainable approach, the MEDCAN Association was founded on December 16, 2014. From the outset, the goal was clear: to support those who rely on cannabis for health reasons and to promote the medical use of cannabis professionally and without reference to Recreational Consumption .
Successes and challenges
The last ten years have been characterized by a lot of hard work. Together we have achieved a great deal:
- Patient meetings are organized in various Swiss cities, offering those affected a safe space for exchange and support.
- We have in public relations to reduce prejudice and bring the topic out of the taboo zone.
- Political pressure was exerted to achieve changes in legislation and to facilitate access.
- A growing community has been created that inspires and strengthens each other.
- Faces and stories of those affected are brought into focus to highlight the relevance and urgency of our work.
- Media presence was used to anchor the topic more broadly in society.
But our path has by no means been easy. The fear of stigmatization, the often unclear legal framework, and the lack of financial and human resources have repeatedly challenged us. Many of us who work for the Association are ourselves chronically ill, yet still willing to invest our limited energy in this important work.
It is these people who have made the Association MEDCAN what it is today: a strong voice for the medical use of cannabis in Switzerland. Without their courage, their strength, and their unwavering conviction, we would not be here.
A heartfelt thank you
We would like to take this special moment to thank all those who have accompanied us on our journey:
- To the patients who, despite their own challenges, have found the courage to speak publicly about their experiences.
- To the members and volunteers who tirelessly work towards our goals with passion, time and expertise – often despite their own health limitations.
- To everyone who supported us with donations, material resources, or their public voice.
You are all the heart of MEDCAN. Your commitment, your stories, and your energy are the reason why we can look back on a successful decade today.
A glimpse into the future
Our mission is far from over. In the coming years, we must continue to work to ensure that all patients who depend on the medical use of cannabis have access to it.
We want:
- acceptance in society .
- Help even more affected people to exercise their rights and find the appropriate treatment.
- Further improve the legal framework create easier access Association
Together we will overcome the next hurdles as well. Our vision remains: a Switzerland where the medical use of cannabis is commonplace.
