MEDCAN 2024 Year in Review

The year 2024 was a special one for our Association : On December 16th, we celebrated our tenth anniversary. MEDCAN was founded in 2014 by Bruno Hildebrand and his friends. Our anniversary reminds us of the intensive educational and advisory work we have carried out over the past 10 years to improve the situation of cannabis patients in Switzerland.

A new website as an information hub

In February, we launched a completely redesigned website in four languages. This redesign was a significant undertaking, involving the updating of all content and its adaptation to the new regulations of the Narcotics Act. Our website serves as a central point of contact for all cannabis patients in Switzerland seeking information on the medical use of cannabis and obtaining a prescription. We also publish contact information for doctors and pharmacies to facilitate the search for medical support. However, disseminating information remains challenging due to legal restrictions. Because cannabis is classified as a narcotic, pharmacies are prohibited from advertising and have limited access to information – a hurdle that we, as an Association , address through our educational efforts.

AGM with personal reunion

In April, our Annual General Meeting took place at the Wipkingen Community Center in Zurich. After a long period of only online events, we were finally able to meet in person again. The atmosphere was accordingly very cheerful and upbeat. The meeting itself proceeded efficiently. Afterwards, we enjoyed Lebanese food and lively conversation. It was a wonderful opportunity to see the Association members again in a relaxed setting after such a long time online.

MEDCAN at CannaTrade 2024

As always, our participation in CannaTrade, the international hemp trade fair in Zurich, was a highlight. From May 24th to 26th, we were present in Hall 622 to raise awareness about the medical applications of cannabis. With over 10,000 visitors and 150 exhibitors, the fair offered an ideal platform for exchange. The organizers dedicated a particularly large amount of space to the medical sector this year, which we were very pleased about. Our booth was well-attended, and many people appreciated the opportunity to learn directly about the medical use of cannabis. On Friday, our Vice President, Simon, participated in a medical panel discussion with experts from the cannabis industry, where he discussed the progress and challenges of prescribing cannabis. On Sunday, Franziska and Simon had the opportunity to give a presentation about MEDCAN's 10 years of work. The numerous positive responses from all sides reinforce our commitment – the positive changes in the lives of many patients through legally prescribed cannabis motivate us to continue providing education and support. And unfortunately, we're not where we want to be yet. Our work is far from over. Far too many people were unaware that the narcotics law had changed.

Summer break and shirt parade

After a busy spring, we needed a summer break to recharge. At the end of August, we participated in the Hemp Parade at the Kulturfabrik Wetzikon. This relaxed Saturday event offered the opportunity to learn all about hemp and its medicinal effects. Our booth attracted many interested visitors, and our Vice President, Simon Winistörfer, gave a presentation on the current situation regarding how to obtain a prescription.

Intensive exchange with experts and the cannabis industry

At the end of October, we met in Zurich with representatives of the Swiss cannabis industry and medical professionals from the Swiss Society for Cannabis in Medicine (SGCM). We had initiated this exchange in the spring, and the discussions on-site were very constructive. There was a consensus to collaborate more closely in the future to provide the Swiss population with factual and scientifically sound information and education about the medical applications of cannabis. The goal is to dispel prejudices and familiarize people with this new medical treatment option.

“We, the patients”

For some time now, we have also been networked internationally. Together with patient organizations from Spain, England, and Ireland, we launched the group "We, the Patients." Together, we are committed to changing the perception of the medical use of cannabis worldwide. In the future, we will organize events by patients for patients. These events will provide all the essential information about medical use and how to obtain a prescription in one's country. The first successful patient event took place in Madrid in October. Events are also planned for Zurich in 2025, where patients will share their experiences, and renowned scientists and medical professionals will provide information on the effects and prescription of cannabis. The first event, focusing on neurodegenerative diseases, will take place in February. More information will follow soon.

Our Telegram channel serves as an exchange platform

Our Telegram channel , which now has over 500 members, offers a platform for cannabis patients to connect and share their experiences . Here, those affected can discuss their experiences with cannabis medications and the prescription process. Medical professionals also participate in the discussions. The channel is one of the few reliable sources for information on the medical use of cannabis.

Outlook and thanks to our supporters

2024 was a busy year with a great deal of volunteer work. Our members do invaluable work every day to raise awareness of the medical use of cannabis. A heartfelt thank you goes to everyone who accompanies us on this journey. Our work would not be possible without the support and trust of our members and supporters. However, there is still a long and challenging road ahead before cannabinoid-based medicine can be made available to all those affected in the form they need and at affordable prices.

Do you find our work important? Then become a member or support us with a donation! Together, we are committed to making access to the medical use of cannabis easier and more affordable for everyone.
