President's Annual Closing Letter
My personal journey as President
Since November 2015, I have had the privilege of serving you as president. This role is a daily part of my life and means a great deal to me, because I know firsthand how crucial access to cannabis as medicine can be. For many of us, it means less pain, better sleep, a more stable psyche, fewer inflammations – and for some, even the opportunity to participate again in daily life, work, and relationships.
I am one of the few patients in Switzerland who has received cost approval from their accident insurance. The Federal Office of Public Health says that only about 11% of all people who have been prescribed medical cannabis receive support from health or accident insurance companies. Eleven percent. That is shockingly low – and it shows how great the need for action still is.
Since August 1, 2022, cannabis has been officially prescribed like an opiate. Its effects are well-documented, the risks are moderate, and unlike opiates, there is no risk of addiction. And yet, we see daily that patients face significant obstacles. The stigma remains strong.
Many sufferers have to pay for their medication entirely out of their own pockets – often several hundred francs per month or considerably more. For chronically ill people, many of whom are unable to work (anymore), this is an enormous financial burden. A burden that no one should have to bear when it comes to a medically prescribed, effective medication.
The reality of those affected
I now answer emails several times a week from all over Switzerland. Many people are looking for information, support, and guidance. I repeatedly encounter the same challenges: people can't find a doctor willing to prescribe cannabis. They receive no support from their health insurance. They face skepticism from their building management or neighbors because they vaporize cannabis for medicinal purposes. And many struggle with prejudice, even though they are taking a doctor-prescribed medication.
And yet, I also see progress, hope, and change. More and more pharmacies are addressing the issue. More and more medical professionals are becoming interested and open to discussing it. Prices are stabilizing. The system isn't perfect, but compared to other European countries, we've achieved a great deal in Switzerland.
Why the Association is so important
A central part of our work is giving patients a voice and educating them about the medical use of cannabis. We tell stories, make personal experiences visible, and demonstrate the effects of medical cannabis. We inform, connect, support, and provide stability – precisely where often no one else is there.
extraordinary amount of gratitude. People have written to us saying they feel taken seriously. That they find information through our Telegramchannelan and are no longer alone. That our online support group helps them share knowledge, find courage, and maintain hope. Our first "We, the Patients" events have shown how strong we are when we come together – how much we can support and strengthen each other.
That is precisely the core of our Association:
an Association of patients for patients.
A place where we empower each other.
A community that grows and is heard.
The journey continues – together
We will continue to advocate for cannabis to be recognized as a medicine. For fair reimbursement regulations. For no one to have to fight for access to their therapy. For prejudice to disappear and understanding to grow. For medical cannabis to receive the place it deserves – not only in legislation, but in people's everyday lives.
We can only walk this path together. With our stories, our experience, our strength, and our determination.
Gratitude at the end of the year
Now that Christmas is approaching and a new year is beginning, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks:
- to everyone who supports us
- to everyone who follows us, listens to us and recommends us to others
- for all those who fight for the medical use of cannabis despite illness
- to everyone who makes our work possible
- for all members renewing their membership
- and to everyone who helps us continue fighting with a donation
In January, we will send out our letter to all members again, and we would be delighted if you remain part of our Association next year as well. Your membership and support make it possible for us to continue informing, raising awareness, participating in political discussions, and giving patients a strong voice.
Together, we are giving this topic the space it deserves.
Together, we are making cannabis visible and respected as medicine.
Without you, this Association not exist.
