Swiss ADHD patients face major problems obtaining medical prescriptions for cannabis

In recent months, the MEDCAN Association has received an above-average number of inquiries from ADHD patients experiencing difficulties obtaining a prescription for cannabis as a treatment option. They report a frustrating search for healthcare professionals. These individuals also want to benefit from last year's legal changes and the association expanded prescribing options for cannabis. However, this process is proving particularly complex and challenging for those with ADHD.
Stigma and prejudice against cannabis flowers

The diagnosis of ADHD is already stigmatized, and as if that weren't enough, these patients also face additional prejudice because they often use cannabis flowers. They report better effectiveness and tolerability compared to other forms of administration. Many of them are able to improve their quality of life and function better in everyday situations this way. However, this preference is not always easy to communicate and often leads to them being labeled "stoners" by some doctors. This prejudice can lead to a derogatory attitude from medical professionals and limit openness to alternative treatment methods.

Individual dosage and research potential

Another problem ADHD patients encounter when being prescribed cannabis is individual dosing. Due to their neurological characteristics, some patients require higher amounts of cannabis flowers to achieve the desired effects. This can cause discomfort for some physicians, as the optimal dosage of cannabis for ADHD patients is not standardized and must be individually adjusted. The medical effects of cannabis on ADHD are a promising area of research that requires further investigation. Numerous reports suggest that vaporizing cannabis flowers can have positive effects on concentration, hyperactivity, impulsivity, anxiety, and sleep disturbances. Nevertheless, the use of medical cannabis for ADHD remains controversial and requires careful consideration.

The importance of respectful treatment

As the MEDCAN Association and a patient organization, we would like to emphasize the importance of not stigmatizing ADHD patients based on their preferences or required dosage. Often, these individuals can improve their symptoms with cannabis and reduce their reliance on medications with serious side effects. For many, it is an alternative to conventional medications. Every patient deserves respectful and unbiased treatment based on individual needs and the best possible medical care.

Outlook and hope for change

We will continue to report on developments in this area and hope that the situation for people with ADHD in Switzerland, and for all patients who could benefit from medical cannabis, will improve. Our goal is to promote open dialogue and achieve broader awareness about the medical effects of cannabis. We are committed to dismantling prejudices and ensuring access to appropriate cannabis treatment for everyone.
