Growing your own cannabis – legal and easy

Since August 2022, medical professionals in Switzerland have been permitted to prescribe cannabis directly as a narcotic – a significant step forward for many chronically ill individuals. Legally available CBD drops with less than 1% THC can also provide support in some cases. Nevertheless, access remains difficult: many struggle to find a doctor willing to prescribe it, and if health insurance doesn't cover the cost, it is often prohibitively expensive.

That's precisely why it can be helpful to grow some legal CBD plants yourself in the spring – for example, on the balcony or in the garden. This way, you take a degree of personal responsibility for your own health.

That's why we're organizing this workshop: by patients for patients, with the goal of giving you the knowledge, tools and confidence to help yourselves.

What you can expect:
  • Practical tips on how to legally grow CBD-rich cannabis plants with less than 1% THC in Switzerland – for example, on the balcony or in the garden.
  • Free starter gifts to make getting started with growing easier.
  • The opportunity to exchange ideas and network with other affected individuals

What is the legal situation?

In Switzerland, since 2011 it has been legal to cultivate, possess, and sell cannabis plants with a THC content of less than 1%. These so-called CBD plants are not considered narcotics. Therefore, anyone growing a few CBD-rich plants at home on their balcony or in their garden is not committing a crime – as long as the THC limit of 1% is not exceeded. This regulation is enshrined in the Narcotics Act (BetmG).

CBD products, such as drops or extracts, have already proven to be a helpful support for many people suffering from various ailments – for example, pain, sleep problems, or inner restlessness. However, for some patients, the effects of these legal products are insufficient. Particularly in cases of chronic pain, spasticity, loss of appetite, or severe sleep disorders, strains with a higher THC content are often medically necessary.

Therefore, our Association advocates for future legal adjustments to grant sick people the right to cultivate medically effective cannabis, even with higher THC content, themselves – especially if they cannot find medical support or afford the medication. No one should have to forgo necessary help for financial reasons.

Help for self-help

Our workshop is more than just a cultivation guide – it's a place for:

  • Networking with other patients
  • Exchange with experts
  • Empowerment through knowledge
  • Community and solidarity

Precisely because so many people affected are left to fend for themselves, we want to create spaces where mutual support is possible. Everyone should have the opportunity to learn about and try legal alternatives – until it is legally possible to grow THC-rich plants for personal use.

Who are «We, The Patients»?

"We, The Patients" is a movement by and for patients. Our vision: To change the perception of the medical use of cannabis and make it easier for sick people to access it. We provide sound information on how to legally obtain a prescription today, what therapeutic effects cannabis can have, and what self-help options are available.

In our do-it-yourself workshops, those affected learn how to legally grow CBD-rich cannabis plants themselves. At the same time, we offer a space for exchange and networking – because no one should have to face their illness alone.

Parliament is currently debating decriminalization and the establishment of a legal market. We hope for legalization that would allow every Swiss citizen to grow a few cannabis plants for personal use. This would particularly benefit patients who otherwise could not afford their therapy – a step towards greater self-determination and security of supply.

A heartfelt thank you

These free events are only possible because of our support. Therefore, we would like to sincerely thank our sponsors:
